Snider added to Revs’ staff

The York Revolution stayed true to form on Monday — announcing former Baltimore Orioles’ bullpen catcher Sam Snider as the final member of the 2008 coaching staff.

Snider spent the last 27 seasons in the Orioles’ organization after joining the club in 1980 to help with batting practice and the bullpen. The Chambersburg native was a roommate of Chris Hoiles when the Revs’ skipper played for the Birds, so adding him to York’s staff makes sense. He was hired by Lancaster earlier in the off-season before Ryan Minor was signed by the Delmarva Shorebirds.

Some interesting facts about Snider: 1) He’s a left-handed catcher (you don’t see one of those every day) 2. He is the only Oriole to ever wear No. 84. He switched his jersey number after Leo Mazzone was brought on board as pitching coach a few years back. 3) His son was hit by a foul ball at Camden Yards a couple years ago. This was around the same time that Jay Gibbons hit a foul ball that amazingly hit his wife in the stands.

My guess is that Snider’s biggest role will be coaching third base. Hoiles did not fare too well in that capacity in a couple games last year (He got Nate Espy thrown out by about 10 strides on one embarrassing play). This will be Snider’s first official coaching job in any level of baseball. He has never played the game professionally.

In a related move, Jason Guarente of the Lancaster New Era is reporting the Barnstormers have hired Charles “Boots” Day to replace Snider. Day was the hitting coach with Triple-A Columbus in the Washington Nationals’ system last year. He is a former major league outfielder who played with the Cardinals, Cubs and Expos.
