Gassner signed by Red Sox

For the second time in three days, the York Revolution has sent a player back to affiliated baseball.

Dave Gassner, who emerged as the Revs’ ace over the last month, has been signed by the Boston Red Sox and he’ll report to Double-A Portland. The former Minnesota Twin is scheduled to make his first start for the Sea Dogs Saturday.

Gassner started the year in Taiwan but returned to the United States to be closer to his wife and 1-year-old daughter. While in York, he was nothing short of lights out. Gassner was 2-3 with a 3.06 ERA and only walked nine batters in 47 innings.

The scout who originally drafted Gassner (Jamie Bane) with Toronto was responsible for his addition to the Red Sox. And with some luck and a few good performances, Gassner is hoping he’ll be back in Triple-A by season’s end.

“We had it in the works three weeks ago after my third start here (in York) and he was trying to do the same thing,” Gassner said before leaving Sovereign Bank Stadium Wednesday. “We thought it was going to work at the last minute and I knew he was in my corner. I knew there was an outside shot with Boston.”

Gassner also flashed quite a bit of leather in his time with the Revs. He had four pickoffs and also fielded his position with ease. Gassner’s last start in a York uniform was an eight-inning, one-run gem against John Halama and Southern Maryland (Coincidentally, Halama was also picked up Wednesday by the Cleveland Indians).

“There are a lot of quality players here (in the Atlantic League),” Gassner said. “There are a lot of ex-big leaguers and it’s not a push-over league. It’s good for the community and the Atlantic League to have these guys come in here and play.”
