Phelps signed by Tigers

Travis Phelps has had his troubles just getting on the field the last several years.

travis_phelpsAfter battling through nearly an eight-hour surgery to remove a tumor behind his ear just more than a year ago, Phelps had the misfortune of finding the shelf again for six weeks in 2008. That time the culprit was a strained muscle in his armpit, of all places.

But once Phelps, a member of the 2008 York Revolution bullpen, finally did reach the pitcher’s mound, it was easy to see why the man with the slender, 160-pound frame ascended all the way to the major leagues with Tampa Bay and Milwaukee years ago.

And Phelps is now getting another chance at baseball’s biggest stage.

The former York Revolution and Newark Bears’ relief pitcher has been signed by the Detroit Tigers, according to York Revolution officials. Phelps turned into one of York’s go-to set-up men last year and also an occasional closer while posting a 3-3 record with a 3.82 ERA.

What’s even more telling about those numbers is Phelps gave up four earned runs in one outing and six earned in another — both outings came in April and May — and only surrendered runs in two other appearances. He also posted a 1.10 ERA in 16 home appearances and had a 49/23 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Phelps joined the Revs the day before the season started — because of Dan Foli attending to personal issues and injuries to starters Landon Jacobsen and Pete Munro — and he made the most of his opportunity. He didn’t allow a single run in 11 games in August and threw up a 2.16 ERA in six September outings, coming in to douse fires that other pitchers started time and time again.

Phelps is also the owner of a 4.28 ERA in 115 minor league appearances and his numbers in the big leagues aren’t far off. He put up a 4.34 ERA in 79 outings with the Devil Rays and Milwaukee, appearing in the major leagues as recently as 2004 with the Brewers.

Now the right-hander from Missouri with the southern feel to him will get another crack at the big leagues. Here’s hoping he sticks there.
